NEMA Type 6 and 6P
Protections Offered by a NEMA Type 6 Enclosure
INDOOR & OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTS
Will your enclosure be located inside or outside? Is there a chance you will move your enclosure to another environment in the future? Either way, you can rely upon the NEMA type 6 enclosure, as it is constructed for indoor or outdoor use.
PROTECTION FOR PERSONNEL
As we mentioned above, the NEMA type 6 enclosure offers a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts. So if you’re worried that your equipment could injure someone, this enclosure should appease you.
DEFENSE AGAINST SOLID FOREIGN OBJECTS
Although the protection it offers is not extensive, the NEMA type 6 enclosure does protect against the ingress of solid foreign objects like falling dirt. If your environment will include settling airborne dust, lint, fibers, and flyings, you may need to explore another NEMA standard. For example, the NEMA type 5 may work if your enclosure will be located indoors.
SAFEGUARD AGAINST MOISTURE
Rain or shine, the NEMA type 6 enclosure will protect your equipment. It provides a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects due to the ingress of water. This includes hose-directed water and water that enters during occasional, temporary submersions at a limited depth.
PROTECTION AGAINST ICE
Finally, the NEMA type 6 enclosure will come in handy in frigid environments. Whether your enclosure is located outside and must confront chilly winter temperatures or inside, perhaps in a freezer, it will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.
How is a Type 6P Enclosure Different?
So how does a NEMA type 6 enclosure compare to a type 6P? Both enclosure types can reside indoors or outdoors and offer the following protections:
- Degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts
- Degree of protection against ingress of solid foreign objects (like falling dirt)
- Will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure
They differ in the degree of protection they offer due to the ingress of water. Both protect against hose-directed water, but while the type 6 protects against the entry of water during occasional and temporary submersion at a limited depth, the type 6P protects against the entry of water during prolonged submersion at a limited depth. In addition, the 6P provides an additional level of protection against corrosion. So if you’re worried about metal or other materials corroding, select the 6P enclosure.

Of course, the type 6 and type 6P enclosures are not your only options. NEMA offers a number of different standards with varying types and degrees of protection. To view all of the NEMA enclosure types, please visit the NEMA website.
