Mig and Tig Welding

Mig Welding

Metal inert gas (mig) welding, sometimes called “wire welding,” utilizes a continuous solid wire electrode, fed through a welding gun into a weld pool. This wire burns and melts the metals, whether carbon, aluminum, or stainless steel, to fuse them together. This simple and flexible welding process can tackle a variety of metal thicknesses, from the very thin and delicate to heavy, structural pieces. It’s also faster and easier to learn when compared to tig welding, making it a great choice for amateur welders.

Tig Welding

Tungsten inert gas (tig) welding, sometimes called Heli-arc welding, utilizes a non-consumable tungsten electrode, which delivers the current to the welding arc. It was developed during the 1930s and came in handy during the construction of aircrafts in WWII. It works best on thinner gauge materials, because you can turn down the power to prevent blowing through the metal. Tig welding is commonly used for fine welding techniques and precision work, but it is also more versatile than mig welding. With the right tig welder, generating an adequate amount of power, you can also perform heavier tasks and pipe welding. In addition, tig welding is precise and produces a clean finish, because the welder has more control over the weld.

Unfortunately, tig welding is also more difficult to learn and use, requiring a highly skilled operator, and it’s quite slow when compared to mig welding. It’s better for short, technical welds than lengthy, standard welds.
